COLONIAL HEIGHTS - The Tri-City Chili Peppers are bringing in over 40 college players from top programs across the country. Now until Opening Night on Saturday, May 29, we will be highlighting many of our talented athletes. Today, we’re proud to introduce two Virginia Tech Hokies, Cade Swisher and Carson Jones.

Swisher is a freshman with Hokies Baseball, but a sophomore in school and is undecided as a major. He was born and raised in Chesterfield, Virginia. Swisher played for former Chili Pepper head coach Tim Lowery at Cosby High School, earning varsity letters all four years as a Titan. He was named a first team all-region infielder after helping Cosby to the Regional Championship in 2018 and was first team all-region, first team all-state, and second team all-metro after his senior season.

Swisher’s freshman year at Virginia Tech was postponed in 2020 due to COVID-19. He saw action in five games for the Hokies, making his collegiate debut against ETSU on February 18, 2020.

Jones started four of the 13 games played for the Hokies in 2020, all in the outfield. He was able to draw four walks in a game against Bryant on March 1, 2020, which tied for the second most in a single game since Tech joined the ACC and one shy of the school record. Overall in the shortened 2020 campaign, he had two hits including one double for three total bases. Jones scored three runs, knocked in three RBI, and went 3-for-4 in stolen base attempts.

Jones attended Deep Run High School in Henrico, Virginia where he earned two varsity letters and was named to the all-region & all-state teams. He also pitched at the Steward School, earning two varsity letters.

COLONIAL HEIGHTS - The Tri-City Chili Peppers are bringing in over 40 college players from top programs across the country. Now until Opening Night on Saturday, May 29, we will be highlighting many of our talented athletes. Today, we’re proud to introduce University of North Carolina Tarheel Brandon Eike.

Eike grew up in Powhatan, Virginia where he competed for Powhatan High School under Coach Gregg Conner. Eike earned four letters during his high school career and was named to the All-State list three times. In 2019, he was recgonized as the Region Player of the Year and received a spot on the All-Metro team.

Eike is a freshman corner infielder at UNC; a school he feels best helps him fulfil his dreams.

"I chose UNC because I believe this is the place to help me achieve my goals on-and-off the field,” said Eike. “The winning culture, along with incredible academics, made Carolina the best place for me.”

Eike now has a chance to spend the summer playing ball and living at home; something he did not think he was going to be able to do.

“I always knew I wanted to play summer ball, I just didn't know where,” said Eike. “Then the Chili Peppers came along and they are giving me the opportunity to get better and stay close to my family during the summer."

COLONIAL HEIGHTS - The Tri-City Chili Peppers are bringing in over 40 college players from top programs across the country. Now until Opening Night on Saturday, May 29, we will be highlighting many of our talented athletes. Today, we’re proud to introduce Longwood Lancer Hunter Gilliam.

Gilliam was named Longwood’s Freshman Student-Athlete of the Year following an outstanding freshman campaign where he hit .253 in 42 starts, 51 appearances, finishing second on the team with four home runs and 21 RBI while tying for third with 41 hits. He hit his first collegiate homerun in 2019 against Maryland-Eastern Shore in Longwood’s first game of the year. He then went on a three-game multi-hit streak.

Gilliam is classed as a sophomore with the Lancer baseball program, but is a junior in school majoring in Kinesiology. He was born and raised in Farmville, Virginia and attended the Fuqua School.

The fact his family can attend 100% of his games was a huge draw for Gilliam and he said they can’t wait to make the trip to Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights this summer.

“I am just really excited for my parents to have the chance to continue to watch me this summer,” said Gilliam. “They already have their season tickets set.”

Gilliam also has the chance to reconnect with some of his childhood teammates as the 2021 Inaugural Season roster features several local products.

“I know a lot of the guys on the team this year. They are guys I grew up with playing ball. We all went our separate ways for college, so getting the chance to play with them now that we are all so much better will be really awesome.”
